A Bunch of New Sites and Links

I have been working a lot in the past few months getting my business all up and running and I finally have had a few days to myself for the first time in a while to get all my bookmarks in order. So here is a big list of blogs, sites, and other things that I’ve found useful!

Margot Kelley Blog:

One of my favorite reads! From the about section on her blog:

“I wonder about the world.  Wonder, ponder, imagine, search for order, believe in logic, and hope for something more.  Curiosity has led me to literature, photography, and philosophy–then, fortunately, back to the physical world itself.  With a Ph.D. in American Literature and an MFA in Photography, I strive to make artworks which reveal a deep engagement with the world at large and which encourage such engagement for others.  And, with a garden large enough to nourish body and spirit, I strive to find the simplifying balance.”
Behance Network / Photography Served:

A friend of mine was recently featured on the photographer served site and I thought that the design and setup of both of these sites is pretty interesting. You have to be invited to be part of either site and then users click a like button (much like Digg) that pushes different photographers, designers, and artists to the top of the list.

Julie Blackmon:

I’m sure most people reading this have herd of her but I still think a lot of her work is great and I never posted anything about her so alas, she is now on my links list.

Kate Bullen Blog:

I posted a few weeks ago about my roommate and she also has a blog! So check it out if you get a chance.

Lay Flat: 02 - Meta:

Shane Lavalette’s brainchild Lay Flat: 02 Meta just came out.  The first Lay Flat sold out extremely fast and now sells on amazon for hundreds of dollars so get on this thing quick!

The Girls:

From their Site:

“The Girls are re-emerging British artists Andrea Blood (b. 1975, UK) and Zoë Sinclair (b. 1976, UK), whose collaboration began in 1996 at Central Saint Martins. After a seven year hiatus, The Girls began making new work in 2006. The Girls’ practice focuses on creating private staged tableaux and recording them as self-portrait photography or video; as well as performance art. Themes explored include Englishness, childhood, gender, women’s relationship with food, obsession and eroticism.”

Foto8:

Mostly photojournalism and documentary work but it’s a good place for inspiration, news, and some great work!

Little Brown Mushroom (LBM) Blog:

You thought Alec Soth stopped writing blogs? WRONG. His love of the fine-art book is alive and well on this site along with several other great book makers! Oh yeah and they sell books to on their main site.

Collect.Give:

Awesome site that is sort of like 20×200 but all print sales go to Charities. At the time of this post they have made almost six thousand dollars. Every two weeks a new artist is featured and the prints usually go for less than 50 bucks. It’s a great way to buy art on the cheap!

British Journal Of Photography:

Another one I am sure many people have herd of but I didn’t have the link before. Great resource for news and some great photograhers.

Steidl:

This is one of my favorite online book stores but I never posted about it for some reason. They sell some of the best photobooks that you can’t find anywhere else.

Harvey Loves Harvey:

Harvey loves Harvey is another artist collaboration between Matthew Nash (Publisher of Big Red and Shiny) and Jason Dean. They work in all different mediums but can usually fall under the umbrella of new media artists. They are always making new work and are often begging the question of “what is art”. An excerpt from their about on their site:

“We see very little value in the lonely artist, hidden away in the studio, waiting to be discovered. Since 1992 Matthew Nash and Jason Dean have collaborated under the name “Harvey Loves Harvey.” We have set out to explore the themes of communication, friendship, artistic intent and identity through our work. In fifteen years of collaboration, we have never lived in the same city, and the tools of communication have become the both subject and the subtext of our work, as we seek forms of communication that can accommodate two artists as a single voice.

That’s it for now. Enjoy!
