Rules of Photo Websites

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

We had a discussion the other day in class about what things differentiate good and bad to have on a website and I thought the list was interesting.

1. NO FLASH. (the sites won’t come up on mobile devices and animations make the site flashy in a bad way)

2. NO POPUPS (don’t make people have to click on a thumbnail and have a popup picture in a new window)

3. Don’t use livebooks.com (they charge over 1000 dollars a year if you are not a student)

4. Let the user control the pictures. (in otherwords don’t make a slideshow that the user cannot control)

5. NO MUSIC…EVER (no body cares what bands you like)

6. Don’t fullscreen the page when the website is brought up (people don’t like that)

7. Have a pdf resume (don’t make it in word)

8. A new thing people are doing is making video shorts about themselves (shows personality)

9. No more than 100 pictures on a site (and even that is pushing it. Try to limit it to the best work)

10. Get a logo (people remember you better if you look professional)

Those are just some of the main points that stuck out for me. Comment if you have any other ideas.
