So the name dropping begins

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

So I just got the internet again this past weekend and can finally update this thing. Unfortunately I have to wake up in 6 hours so this is going to be a short one.

Week 1: Elsa Dorfman: Sweet older lady, only had a half a day shoot with her and a few families. The rest of the week was a lot of William Wegman at his studio with his dogs and his giant living space/studio. He is probably one of the nicest photographers I’ve met thus far.

Week 2: More Wegman as well as Peter Beard. I will soon update a few pictures that I took with my camera phone of the rediculousness that was Peter Beard and his entourage. Throughout the day he had about 30 or so models come through as well as 4 other photographer friends and a video guy who was making a reality TV show about models lives. I was there till about 8:30 - 9:00 that night and didn’t actually get home until 11:30ish because my commute is somewhere around two hours. That weekend we went on a shoot with Mary Ellen Mark at a prom in Cape Cod. She had somewhere around 10 assistants as well as me, another intern that works at the 20×24 studio and my two bosses. If there is a new aperture around pick it up and it has around 10 of the images she has done with the camera in the past at proms. It is her new person project and it is pretty interesting. It was a long, long week, somewhere around 80 something hours total.

Week 3: Lyle Ashton Harris came and did some extreme close ups of some people and he brought his book with him to show us. He currently has a show up (I am not totally sure where) and had an article written about him in ebony magazine. He was extremely nice too. David Levinthal came for a few days and shot some new stuff on hockey, sort of like his latest baseball series except with hockey players. He gave me one of the prints that was a bit off and signed it, he was also a very kind photographer.

Week 4 (this week): We shot some light bulbs with Amanda Mean and then yesterday I went to Mary Ellen’s studio and she was doing a shoot for something about strong women, I didn’t get the entire story, but it was another big production. Hearing that people are in wardrobe or make-up is still a bit strange to me. Fran Dresser was there and we photographed her with her dog. She has the exact same voice that she has on the nanny, it was strange that she was there. I read on wikipedia that she just recently beat cancer and I believe that is why she was there on the strong women line up for this project.

Now that I have dropped all those names I can update about myself a bit. I have been commuting to New York everyday around 5 hours total and it is insane. I have no idea how people can do it everyday and I have a ton of respect for those who can. I decided to take off Wednesdays to break up my week a bit so I don’t go totally insane. I have been shooting sort of sporadically when I get the chance. It is hard when there is not a lot of people around for me to photograph. I only have 3 friends left in my old town and I have some family around that I have seen a few times. I just don’t photograph well when I don’t feel entirely or at least a little bit comfortable. I still love photography and since I’ve had this job I have had some crazy experiences that I would have never had in Boston or anywhere else. It is sad to think that the studio could be closing in the next couple years. Polaroid stopped making pull apart film entirely now, for the 20×24 or any other kind of camera. It is all made and what ever is left is what the consumers get to buy and then that is the end. Thank god fuji is still making Polaroids.

If anyone has any questions just email me at shanegodfrey@gmail.com . Hopefully my website will be updated soon, I just have not had the time nor wanted to take the small amount of free time I have to work on it.
