Big Red and Shiny Ends - off the Cuff Reaction

Monday, August 16th, 2010

I haven’t written anything in months, I just haven’t had the time to. There are about 15 posts I started and never finished, starting with this same sentence, sitting over this very post begging me to finish them. Starting my own business has turned out to be much more time consuming than I could have imagined; though I would have never had it any other way. Me and art discourse have taken an almost 6 month hiatus, and tonight I come home to the unfortunate news of Big Red and Shiny, one of my favorite online sources for art, releasing it’s last issue. The blog will still be up as will the archives, but a big part of what holds together the New England and Boston art community has ended.

It takes a lot for a site to become a regular read for me. It has to have diversity, which Big Red had in scads. It went from summer movie reviews (of which I was happily a part of last year) to something as familiar as abstract painting. It has to have personality, and Big Red had so many different kinds of contributors from students, to big time artists. The two main players (Matt Gamber and Matt Nash) happen to be former teacher’s of mine who I have not been able to keep up with as much as I had liked to post grad, but whom I have still been able to read their thoughts and views via Big Red. I always had planned on trying to submit more articles, read more, and be a bigger part of the publication, but time and work have gotten more in the way than I had planned. I just feel as though anyone who is part of the Boston art community should know the importance of Big Red and Shiny ending, and my regret of not being able to contribute more before it’s end. Next week is fully packed for me, but after that I will be writing a lot more and trying to invest more of my time into what I really love about photography and art; the discourse.
